The school year seems to be going pretty well so far. Keith is doing a great job getting himself up and ready in the mornings (of course, he is the Early Riser of the family). Even though Mary practically never had homework in 6th grade, when he tells me HE doesn't, I'm always giving him the stink eye. I can't really trust him with all the drama of "forgotten" and "lost" homework from the last five years of elementary school. Still, I'm (mostly) taking his word for it, and we'll see what happens in a few weeks as grades start getting recorded in the system.
Mary has a lot of responsibility this year. She made the Varsity swim team (and she's an eighth grader!), and she has to take a bus most days to the high school for practice or for departure for meets. And it seems as if almost every day SOMETHING gets forgotten: goggles, drylands gear, contact case. Not to mention that she's already had to leave two practices due to migraines. But she does seem to love the coaches. She is also taking the Smarty Pants Science class this year, which means that she is taking a 10th grade biology-credited class. She has homework every night for that class. Science is her favorite subject, so so far no issues/complaining about getting that stuff done. It's hard though with swim practice every night. This is a big year for her to learn how to balance everything.
I had high hopes that Izzy might be a little easier getting ready for school without Keith around to distract her. So far: NO. She's just NOT a morning person. The last several days I've been thinking we were doing pretty well (um, except for my Constant Prodding to Get Up, Get Dressed, Eat, Pack Your Lunch), but then suddenly I'll look at the clock and realize there is only five minutes until her bus gets here! Augh! I'm hoping we can iron this out soon. They have a New Math they've started teaching which included a quick little introductory note to teach the parents how to do it. No big changes, but it amuses me how they keep changing the processes. Izzy generally likes math, but I can already tell she's getting tired of having homework in it *every* night. Grin and bear it, kid!
John applied for and got offered a "real" job at the company for which he's been contracting. It's a big cut in pay, though. We've already just about budgeted as low as we can possibly go, but he was told his contract would probably not be renewed in December, so he felt compelled to take it. We'll overhaul the budget some MORE and well...hope we'll make it through OK. At least now we have company-sponsored benefits which will help save a LITTLE money.
Meanwhile, I got the call to do my usual fall temp job again. I said yes, but now I'm all freaked out about attempting to find affordable childcare in order to even go. I already asked for a bit of a raise since I noticed that parking fees have gone up. If I didn't like the place so much, I would not have been tempted. I'm going to make some phone calls and see what I can turn up! It's a good place to work, and I'd hate to turn it down.
I've started finishing the quilt my Grandmother started and intended for my brother if/when they had a baby or an adoption went through. I haven't gotten very far along, though. The only time I have to work on it is while Sophie sleeps--and she's going down to one nap a day--or after all the kids have gone to bed, and I'm just too pooped to pot. I keep reminding myself there isn't THAT much more to do. And yet, there kinda IS. Two more months to get it done. I'm hoping a few good naps (um, when I'm not charging around the house attempting to get caught up on housework--ha!) next week will get some real progress going.
